New Tech – Reactions From an Old Guy

An interactive discussion about new, exciting technology.
New+Tech+-+Reactions+From+an+Old+Guy

Okay, maybe I’m not that old (I’m only 41), but in the immortal words of Emmit Brown, aka Doc. from the film Back to the Future, “Great Scott!” Our future is staring us in the face… and if you didn’t already know, it can talk back to us too. That certainly makes me feel old. New technology is coming down the line and it has the potential to change our world, maybe completely.

I’m not someone who prides himself on being the first to get any new technology but lately, I’ve been seeing rapid advancement in the tech world that’s maybe making feel a little FOMO. Many would say this rapid development is due to the sharp increase in AI technology availability, and I would certainly agree. I admit, I’ve usually scoffed at the idea that there is some imperative to owning these cutting-edge devices. However, the more I learn about some of the new things coming out, the more I feel compelled to encourage my students to learn along with me. And there’s little doubt in my mind that they probably already know more about it than I do.

First up: Humane AI pin: watch this demonstration video made by the creators of Humane – Humane AI Demo video – YouTube . Is this as startling to you as it is to me? The application of AI in this way has some gigantic implications regarding how we live our lives. I’ll let you be the judge, but I’m a little stunned at how incredible this technology really is. Pre-orders for this product begin Thursday, November 16th, 2023. Read more about this product and some of the criticism here: Axios article – Humane AI pin

Next up: Apple is planning to release a pair of glasses, similarly groundbreaking.

Watch this intro video to this new product – Apple Glass is here to change the future – Again, stunning to say the least. Despite being a year ago, with more recent news suggesting there are some hiccups in the release, it’s still intriguing to think about the capabilities of this type of technology. The way I understand it, these glasses were going to be released in the spring of 2023 but when OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT released their AI, Apple took these glasses back to the drawing board. There is no release date set for these yet.

To attempt to get into every potential or new product coming out from these various tech companies, some Davids and some Goliaths, would be an exercise in breakneck futility. Therefore, with that said, we here at W2W would like to hear from you! Please comment if you think you’ll be getting any of this new technology or if there are other new technologies you are excited or curious about! Let’s all learn together!

This is my third year teaching journalism here at Woodmore High School and the first year we've used this website to disseminate our stories. I believe in guiding the students in a way that allows for the students to make the primary content decisions while helping foster creativity and broader thinking. I have years of writing experience and I am an avid consumer of all journalism. I live in Perrysburg with my family: my wife, Beth, and my kids, Aubrey and Emilia. At the high school, aside from teaching journalism, I also teach English III and IV and CCP College Composition. My main hobbies include golf, football, art, writing, singing, and volleyball.
