The Varsity Girls’ Softball team has been killing it on the diamond this year. To start, they have won four out of the last five games. They played Hopewell Louden, Port Clinton, Gibsonburg, Lakota, and Danbury.
Their most recent game, Hopewell Louden, was played at Hopewell and was a great victory. The girls won fifteen to fourteen. The score was back and forth the whole time. Sophomore pitcher Taylor Hill pitched for a total of 5.1 innings, then was relieved by sophomore Liv Scavio to pitch one inning of the game. After that, Taylor Hill went back in to finish the game off. Taylor was asked how she handles pressure during close games and what her favorite memory is so far during her pitching career. She said, “I handle pressure in high-stakes moments or games by reminding myself to have fun. Even if I strike out or make an error, I have to move on to the next play because you can’t change the past. I also try to think of softball as a fun after-school activity, while it can be stressful a lot of the time, I try not to take it too seriously.”
The girls also had a great game in the batter’s box. Junior Kelsey Kaylor had three hits, including two doubles and three RBIs, while senior Kara Schneider had a single and a double. She also hit a home run. Freshman Payton Whitcum had three hits, one of which was a double. Kelsey was also asked how she handles pressure during close games and what her favorite memory is so far during her pitching career. She said, “My favorite moment on the field is when we make a big play to get us out of the inning because the whole team gets hyped up. To handle pressure during a big game, I try to relax and do the best I can in that moment and remember that whatever happens is not the end of the world.
The softball team plays the girls at Old Fort, Lake, St. Joseph CC, St. Mary CC, and Margaretta next week. Go cheer them on!
