The Girls Varsity Soccer Team at Woodmore has been a force to be reckoned with since the very beginning. The girls are in their second year now in a new league and have started adjusting to their new competitors. With key players now graduated, new leaders have had to step up and take charge.
The girls are coached by Jeff Helmke and Troy Hahn. They are great role models to all and show the girls the importance of hard work everyday. I interviewed senior, Megan Vogelpohl and she said that the coaches are good for the team because “they understand us and how we each play. They’ve known almost all of us for a long time and have coached us since the beginning. They know and have seen how well we can play together and therefore they can push us to be an even better team.” Megan has become an important player on the team since losing impactful players. She says “we’ve had to readapt to a new dynamic and some new positions. Like our goalie, Layla, leaving was a really big hit to the team but Kara stepped up and has been a great addition to the team. I think we connect with each other enough and keep building players up to fill new shoes”. Megan is involved in the National Honors Society, Student council, Key Club, and FCA. After high school Megan plans to attend college for radiation therapy.
The team is loaded with lots of talent as they hope to put it to good use in a far tournament run. When I asked sophomore Riley Hesselbart where she thinks the team will end up this year she said, “I think our team has a lot of potential to make a deep run this season. I think our hard work will pay off, we have many dedicated girls on our team this year”. She also said this about the girls chemistry this year. “Every single one of our girls pushes one another to be the best they can for the team and themselves. Overall our team is like one big family”.
The soccer team is filled with devoted girls who strive to be the best everyday. With many young freshmen and sophomores who are now an important addition to the team, it will be exciting to see how they step into key roles. Good luck to the girls on the rest of their season!
