The Woodmore highschool football team won game two at home last Friday against the Montpelier Locomotives. The score was 44-14, making them 2-0. They had a great second quarter scoring 24 points, then holding Montpelier to eight total yards on nine plays in the second half. Junior Landon Rich again had an outstanding performance scoring two rushing touchdowns and carrying the ball 19 times for 218 yards, averaging 11 yards per carry.
Junior Michael Seeger also had a great game scoring two rushing touchdowns, one 56 yards and the other 26 yards, and a two-point conversion while totaling 128 yards on 10 carries (almost 13 yards per carry). He was asked about his thoughts on how far Woodmore’s defense has come. His response was, “Our defense has come a long way from what it used to be. We have great defensive coaches that have a game plan every week in order for us to succeed. As a team we trust each other and focus on doing our job which leads to our defense being able to succeed”. He was also asked about how he felt when he scored his 56 yard touchdown. His response; “It feels great to have a big run. It wouldn’t have happened without my teammates all executing their assignments and giving me an open lane to the endzone”.
Sophomore Cole Potridge had his first career touchdown. He was asked how he felt about his touchdown and what he thinks the team can do to improve. His response was “My touchdown felt good but I wasn’t satisfied because the job isn’t finished”. He also said,”I think what we could do to make the team better is if everyone puts 110% into the sport, watch film, hit the weight room a lot, eat a lot of food, and always think about football”.
Woodmores passing game also did well as sophomore quarterback Calvin Lipstraw was 8-of-11 passing for 90 yards. Senior Kyle Mangus also caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from Junior quarterback Gavin Herrig midway through the fourth quarter. Mangus was asked how it felt to have his first career touchdown. His response was “It’s awesome to get my first touchdown, when I saw Gavin rolling out I had to run where he was and he threw a perfect pass to me, when I caught the ball I was excited and everyone congratulated me and it felt great”. He was also asked what was going through his mind when lining up to kick a game changing field goal. His response was “When I was lining up for the field goal I was nervous because the offense drove the ball down in under 2 minutes and relied on me to put us up by 10. Right when I kicked it, I knew it was going to be good”.
