The Upcoming NFL Season
The NFL season is finally upon us and it’s the most exciting time of the year! Everyone has a favorite team that they root for and they have one goal in mind: hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. A poll was sent out to the student body of Woodmore High School to ask their opinion on what team is going to win the Super Bowl. The most voted team was the Philadelphia Eagles with 18% of the votes, personally I don’t agree. It’s early in the season and anything can happen, the NFL is very unpredictable but I don’t think the Eagles have what it takes. I don’t even think the Eagles are the best team in the NFC, the 49ers look like the best team in the NFC and the NFL. If Brock Purdy can just be a serviceable quarterback and just be a leader I believe that the 49ers can and will go all the way.
This season marks the first time Tom Brady in 23 years hasn’t suited up for an NFL team. Tom Brady is known as the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) he has the most Super Bowl wins of any player and has thrown for the most passing yards and passing touchdowns of all time, he’s my GOAT. Tom Brady is frowned upon because he would do anything to win even if it involved bending the rules. In 2015 The New England Patriots and The Indianapolis Colts played in the AFC championship game. Tom Brady and the New England Patriots deflated the balls they were using so they were easier to throw and catch. The patriots ended up winning the game and winning the superbowl, once the NFL found out Tom Brady was suspended for 4 games in the upcoming season and the team was fined a million dollars. You can love him or hate him but he is the greatest player to ever play and it is officially the end of the Tom Brady era.
In the 2023 NFL draft, three quarterbacks were drafted in the first four picks, they all have very high upside and potential but the last time this happened it didn’t go so well. In the 2021 NFL draft three quarterbacks were drafted with the first three picks in the 1st round. Two of those quarterbacks are backups so it only shows that just because they’re high picks doesn’t mean they’re guaranteed to be good. In the 2023 draft Bryce Young out of Alabama University was picked 1st overall by the Carolina Panthers. He threw for 8,356 yards and 80 touchdowns in his time at Alabama. He led Alabama to a national championship beating Georgia in 2020 and in 2021. He won the Heisman trophy which is given to the best player in college each season. With the second overall pick the Houston Texans selected C.J. Stroud out of the Ohio State University. He threw for 8,123 yards and 85 touchdowns in his time at Ohio State. He led Ohio State to a Rose Bowl win and finished 4th in Heisman voting in 2021. In 2022 he led the team to the college football playoffs but lost to the Georgia Bulldogs in the semifinals. With the fourth pick in the 2023 NFL draft, the Indianapolis Colts selected Anthony Richardson out of Florida University. He only started 13 games in college which is very few compared to Young’s 27 and Stroud’s 25. Richardson threw for 3,105 yards and 24 touchdowns while rushing for 1’116 yards and 12 touchdowns. Where Richardson lacks experience and statistics he makes up for in potential. He is the best dual threat quarterback since Lamar Jackson. Richardson has potential to be better than Lamar Jackson. Richardson shattered combine records like the broad jump and vertical jump and got the 4th fastest time ever in the 40 yard dash by a quarterback. In his one year starting at Florida University they went 6-7, so he might’ve not put up the wins or stats but he was drafted high because of what he could be not what he is right now.
