Kickin’ It On the Pitch
The girl’s soccer team has had an outstanding season so far. They are 10-2-1 on the season overall, 5-1-1 in conference play, and 2nd in the SBC. Last year the girl’s soccer team went to the regional finals which was extremely impressive and they are looking just as good as last year.. With the way they have been playing this year, they might have a shot at state which would be huge for the girl’s soccer team and Woodmore sports as a whole. The Lady Cats are currently on a 5 game win streak and their only 2 losses were to Eastwood- an out-of-conference game- and to Norwalk which is ranked number 1 in the conference with a record of 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the SBC.
Senior Caydie Buchanan, one of the captains of the girl’s soccer team, was interviewed and had some things to say about the team and the challenges of being a leader, “ I’ve been starting all 4 years and the girls that lead the team before me were incredibly influential. I think just the dedication I have towards the sport gave me the captain spot. I understand the game very well and know how to help the younger girls too. The only downside to that is there’s a lot more pressure. Not only from coaches and parents but from the other teams too. It’s difficult to focus on your own game and try to help the younger girls at the same time.” She was also asked about the challenges of dual sporting “This is my third year dual sporting with cross and soccer and the main struggle is getting back in the groove for either sport. There are weeks I only go to two practices for cross country and that means I’m behind on workouts and mileage compared to everyone else. Mallory and Camille both dual sport with me and it’s really cool to have other people who get it and understand. It’s so worth it though because there’s two support systems that we have and even if we don’t make it to practice as much, everyone just wants us to succeed.”
The Lady Cats have had some really important wins like the Vermilion game on September 25th, dominating 8-0. Vermilion is 9-3-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the conference play ranking them 4th in the SBC. Senior Caydie Buchanan won player of the game and here is what she had to say “It felt really good to finally come together as a team and collectively play well. We knew we could play that well it just took a lot of time for us to get to that point and I’m super excited to see what else we can do. It was cool to be player of the game because I usually don’t score like that and it’s credit to the whole team. I wouldn’t have been able to get the shots off without the passes from everyone else.”
The Lady Cats leading scorer is Sophomore Kelsey Kaylor with 21 goals in total while averaging 1.9 goals per game. Caydie Buchanan is the assist leader with 7 assists total and .6 assists per game. The goalkeeper Senior Layla McGinnis has been outstanding with 4.4 saves per game and a .865 goal-against average. Earlier this season she set a Woodmore record with 42 career wins.
The team as a whole has had a great season so far and they’re only looking to improve and make a run into the playoffs!
