The swing of the club, overlooking the fairway, concentration on the putting green, aiming for the hole. Much preparation goes into getting ready for a golf match, and the three seniors on the girl’s golf team for Woodmore have been mastering this. For Sophie Repka, going to the driving range to work with the drivers and irons is helpful, but practicing on the putting green is most important because, “It makes or breaks your game and it’s my most valuable asset so I really focus on practicing speed and distance in putting before a match.” Abby Reineck does the same thing to get ready before a match while Lilian Myers stretches and takes deep breaths. There is no doubt that golf is a challenging sport, and these girls said the best thing you can do is handle your emotions and focus to avoid frustration, to hone in on the mental aspect and play like golf is the most important thing in the world. Unfortunately, the girl’s golf team is very small. When asking the seniors on the team how a small team impacts them, Lily Myers said, “more girls would give us a better chance at improvement.”, Abby Reineck commented that, “if one girl gets hurt then you would have to move people up and it’s just difficult when you also don’t have a JV team.”, then Sophie Repka approached it from a statistical standpoint, saying, “A match only counts the top four scores to make up the final team score, so it’s very helpful to have multiple players to fill those scores.” She also added that having more girls on the team would be very valuable. The girls’ responses to the question, “what is your message for girls to join golf?”, was quite simple. “If you want to join golf, you should.” It’s a great female support group and is also very tight-knit. Abby Reineck believes golf is very calming as long as you forget about your bad hits and move on to the next hole or match. Sophie Repka said it best. “it doesn’t matter if you haven’t played golf before in your life. If you want to join, you should. The first time I started golfing was 8th grade and I have made a vast improvement since then. Golf is an adventure and we’re like a family and depend on each other and we’d love to have girls join and continue the woodmore girls golf team for many years to come.” So there you have it, you can be as inexperienced as possible and make a huge difference for the team. Try it out, join golf and see how it could change your life and your time here at Woodmore High School. Congratulations to the senior girls on the golf team! You will be missed. Goodluck with the rest of your season!
