A few weeks ago the National Honors Society had the privilege to serve others at the Cherry Street Mission! The Cherry Street Mission is located in Toledo and provides opportunities for any individual experiencing any type of poverty in their life. This gave students the opportunity to serve others alongside some of their best friends.
While at Cherry Street, students cleaned many windows outside of the building so residents could look outside to see the world through cleaner windows. This is something students may not have thought was important but realized how much it was appreciated after many people thanked them for their hard work. President of National Honors Society, Savannah Plantz, shared with me,“Though it doesn’t seem like a big deal, being able to see the sunshine through the clean windows could easily make someone’s day.” The privilege of simply enjoying the nice weather was something the students learned to not take for granted. Plantz also said, “ I think the best part about helping out was knowing that we were all making a difference in people’s lives. Serving those that rely on Cherry Street Mission made me feel blessed. Being able to help those who are less fortunate is truly a great feeling that I really enjoy.” Another student that helped serve was junior Blane Overmyer. Blane explained, “The best part about the window washing was being out in the nice weather with friends and being able to see the people excited by watching us wash them. It felt good knowing you were helping those in need even though it wasn’t much.”
Students quickly learned to be grateful for all of the small things they have. Being able to help others while having fun with friends is a true privilege. Junior, Kelsey Kaylor, said it perfectly, “Serving others is important not only because people think it looks good for Woodmore, but it truly makes you feel good as a person to be able to help the people in the world that don’t have access to everyday essentials like we do.” This opportunity to serve their community was a good lesson for all students that attended, and we are excited to see what else they accomplish in the future.
