The Woodmore boys wrestling team had their home tournament last weekend, the A classic. The tournament turned out great and went the way that the wrestling team was expecting it to turn out. The Wildcats got first place overall as a team and won the entire tournament.
The Wildcats had 9 of their wrestlers make it onto the podium, which is the top 6 wrestlers in each weight class. Gage Sliwinski placed 6th at the 113 pound weight class. Matt Caldwell placed 4th at the 126 pound weight class, and Wyatt Thieroff placed 3rd at the 120 pound weight class. Bailey Jendrzejak, Michael Seeger, Landon Rich, Aiden Cordy and Quincy Milleschone all placed 2nd at the A Classic. Jendrzejak in the 215 weight class, Seeger in the 190 weight class, Rich in the 175 pound weight class, Cordy in the 138 pound weight class and lastly Milleschone in the 132 pound weight class. The Wildcats had one champion at the A Classic tournament and that was Gavin Herrig at the 157 pound weight class.
I interviewed Junior wrestler Gavin Herrig about his outstanding performance at the A Classic tournament. Herrig has been in and out of wrestling the past 2 years due to him having to undergo 3 knee surgeries to get back to a healthy state. But when Herrig had the opportunity to show off his potential and skills at the A classic he did not disappoint. Herrig went 7-0 to win the tournament on Saturday. The first question that I asked Herrig was, how did it feel to win the A classic for the first time? His response was, “It felt really good to win it for the first time because not only was it my first time winning the A classic but my first time winning a varsity tournament in general. As soon as my hand was raised I couldn’t believe I actually had won and I was ecstatic.” The next question that I asked Gavin was, what are your hopes for the rest of the season? He responded with, “I hope to continue my streak with a good record and make it deep into districts.” What do you think you will do at league?, was the next topic I asked him about and his response was the following, “I plan on wrestling for 1st place at league.”
Next I asked Gavin , you are arguably wrestling the best on the team right now with a 92.3% win rate, how do you feel about this stat? ” His response was, “I feel that I have earned this stat but will keep pushing as hard as I can to continue improving and winning more.” Lastly I asked Herrig, you also have the second highest bonus point percentage at 69.2%, and a 10-1 ratio on team points scored to team points given up in your matches. How does this help motivate you to keep improving and wrestle the best that you can for your team and continue to be a vital factor for the team? “It really pushes me to try to perform as best as I can at all points knowing that I have something to prove. I know some look up to me driving me to do even better and continuing to wrestle how I am. I also know I am a key factor for my team in order to place higher overall in some of the harder tournaments coming up, so I need to get even better”,was Gavin Herrig’s response to the final question.
Woomores next wrestling tournament will be at Van Buren on Friday the 17th. Good luck Wildcats at your next tournament.
