The Woodmore football team took a big win at home last week against Lakota. The stands were packed on the cold night because this game was very important. If the Wildcats won this game, that meant they would have a winning record at 5-4 and go to the playoffs. The final score ended up being 17-21.
Junior Landon Rich had his best game yet with 318 rushing yards (averaging about 8 yards per carry). He had 42 carries and three touchdowns. Rich came out swinging in the second half when he had an 84-yard touchdown run on the first play. Rich was asked how it felt getting the big win on Friday. How did it feel to have 318 yards and 3 touchdowns, and how can Woodmore prepare for our first playoff game this week? He responded, “the win felt great, it was probably the most excited I have been after a win before. It felt good getting the yards and touchdowns. We can prepare by coming in like we do every day and putting in the work but also knowing that if we lose and we’re done. We have to do things right”.
Senior captain Izaiah Wilson also had a great game in the trenches. During halftime, he helped the team keep their spirits up and encouraged us to come out and fight hard in the second half. I asked him how the big win felt on Friday and how we prepared for this week’s game. He said, “the win was amazing, I couldn’t ask for a better senior season. A lot of people were doubtful about the team’s success but we knew that we had talent and confidence and were just tired of losing and that positively fueled us for the season and now we are playing another week of football. We have to look at this week to get better as a team, fix small issues that could matter on Friday, and we need to just play together and play for the great community we have here at Woodmore.
Woodmore has qualified for playoffs for the first time since 2001. The Wildcats will travel to Sherwood Fairview as the #11 seed in the region. Fairview is the #6 seed in the region. There will be a student bus leaving from the high school on Friday so make sure to cheer your team on. Go Wildcats!
